Abstract

744,735. Crimping yarns. HEBERLEIN & CO., AKT.-GES. Feb. 19, 1954 [Feb. 26, 1953], No. 4937/54. Class 120 (3). In the manufacture of crimped yarn consisting of fully synthetic organic fibres, e.g. of polyamides such as nylon, polyvinyl compounds such as polyacrylonitrile, polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate, by temporarily hightwisting the smooth yarn by means of a falsetwisting device in the same or the opposite sense to the initial twist, the yarn in the highly twisted state is passed for a period of from 2 to 30 seconds through a heated channel containing a gaseous medium, e.g. hot air from which the oxygen may be displaced by the introduction of superheated steam or hot inert gas, having a temperature between 150‹ and 30‹ C. below the melting point of the fibre material, e.g. 190- 210‹ C. for polyhexamethylene adipamide or 165-185‹ C. for #-caprolactum, and is subsequently passed through a cooling zone. The channel may be a metal tube heated by an electric coil or flow of current therethrough, or a jacketed tube heated by hot fluid such as water, oil, steam or vapour of a volatile substance. The yarn may be impregnated with water which may contain a wetting agent, e.g. sodium diisobutyl-naphthalene sulphonate, before high twisting. Two yarns may be given temporary high twist in opposite directions and subsequently doubled, the product having a normal twist. Specifications 606,257 and 611,538 are referred to.
