Abstract

The processing, e.g. dyeing, of polyethylene terephthalate and like highly polymeric polyesters containing at least one aromatic nucleus in each recurrent structural unit is improved by treatment of chips, powder, filaments, or fabrics of the polyester with sulphuric acid or a derivative thereof, e.g. chlorsulphonic acid, at a concentration between 70-90 per cent by weight, and at temperatures between -10 and 110 DEG C. and removing the acid after the treatment by washing. Concentrations above 85 per cent produce stiffening or parchmentizing of the material while concentrations below 77 per cent effect delustring. In examples: (1) polyethylene terephthalate fabric is treated for 15 minutes at 15 DEG C. in 83.5 per cent sulphuric acid; the treated fabric is squeezed, washed first in water and then in 2 per cent solution of disodium hydrogen phosphate, and dyed with Dispersol Crimson BS; (2) the same fabric is treated with 85 per cent acid for 1 minute at 15.5 DEG C., or (3) with 77 per cent acid at 94 DEG C. for 2 hours.ALSO:The processing, e.g. dyeing, of polyethylene terephthalate and like highly polymeric polyesters containing at least one aromatic nucleus in each recurrent structural unit is improved by treatment of filaments or fabrics of the polyester with sulphuric acid or derivative thereof, e.g. chlorsulphonic acid, at a concentration between 70-90 per cent by weight and at temperatures between -10 and 110 DEG C. and removing the acid after the treatment by washing.
