Abstract

Polyethylene terephthalate filaments or fibres are treated with steam, ammonia, or an amine, such as methylamine, until the intrinsic viscosity of the filament or fibre material is reduced to between 0.45 and 0.28 inclusive. The fibres may be made up into fabrics before treatment. The treatment is preferably carried out at elevated temperature and, in the case of treatment with steam or gaseous ammonia, also at superatmospheric pressure. The intrinsic viscosity of the polymer is calculated according to a formula given in the Specification. In an example, a knitted fabric of polyethylene terephthalate having an initial intrinsic viscosityof-0.59 is treated for 18 hours at room tempe as ture and atmospheric pressure with an aqueour solution of ammonia having a specific gravity of 0.88, the intrinsic viscosity of the polymer being thereby reduced to 0.40. In another example, polyethylene terephthalate fabrics of 0.59 I.V. are treated with steam in an autoclave at 40 p.s.i. for 6 hours and 12 hours with consequent reduction of the I.V. to 0.42 and 0.34 respectively. In a third example, a crimped tow of polyethylene terephthalate filaments is treated with gaseous ammonia at 130 DEG C. and 30 p.s.i. for 45 minutes, and in a fourth example a knitted fabric of polyethylene terephthalate fibres is treated for 2 hours in a 40% by weight methylamine solution at room temperature. The treatment reduces the tendency of fabrics made from polyethylene terephthalate yarns to form small adherent balls of loose fibres when abraded.
