In making a composite yarn or thread by intertwisting a staple or filamentary yarn of fully synthetic material such as a polyamide, polyester, or polyacrylonitrile, having a high breaking elongation and a staple or filamentary yarn having a lower breaking elongation such as regenerated cellulose or cellulose acetate, the first-mentioned yarn is initially subjected to a hot pre-stretching treatment in such a manner that its breaking elongation is reduced to approximately that of the other yarn.
