Abstract

555,809. Treating artificial filament fabrics with liquids &c. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS Ltd., and LOASBY, G. March 6, 1942, No. 2942. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] Crape and like effects are produced in fabrics woven from groups of nylon threads of different shrinkability or from nylon threads and threads of other fibre-forming material having a shrinkability different from that of the nylon threads, by subjecting the fabrics to the action of hot water or steam at a temperature below or above 100‹C. and at atmospheric or reduced or elevated pressure. Nylon threads of different shrinkability may be obtained by cold drawing or stretching the threads to different degrees. When water is used as the shrinking agent, it may contain dissolved salts such as sodium sulphite. In an example, a fabric containing a viscose yarn warp and a weft comprising viscose yarn alternating with nylon yarn, is treated with boiling water without tension so that the nylon yarns shrink and a crape effect is produced. In another example, a fabric having a nylon warp and two alternating groups of nylon threads of different shrinkability in the weft is wound on a perforated roll through which wet steam is blown and passed through the fabric for 20 minutes. The fabric is then dried without tension, and a crape effect is produced. The nylon threads may be made of any synthetic fibre-forming polyamide. Specifications 461,236 and 461,237 are referred to.
