Abstract

Artificial filaments, fibres, films, tubes, and other articles are obtained by extruding a solution of an acrylonitrile polymer in a dimethyl amide of formic or acetic acid into a coagulating liquid comprising a mixture of water and 35-80 per cent by volume of dimethyl formamide or 20-70 per cent by volume of dimethyl acetamide. The acrylonitrile polymer may be polyacrylonitrile itself or a copolymer or interpolymer of acrylonitrile containing at least 65 per cent, preferably 70-98 per cent, of acrylonitrile in the polymer molecule. Copolymers of acrylonitrile with vinyl acetate, styrene, vinyl chloride, a vinyl pyridine such as 2-vinyl pyridine, isobutene, dimethyl fumarate, methyl methacrylate, methacrylonitrile, acrylic acid, or acrylic esters, may be used. The filaments which are formed may be stretched between godets, or as they are advanced over a thread-advancing and stretching reel, or as they are passed through a steam chamber. They may be stretched 100-300 per cent at room temperature or at temperatures up to 100 DEG C., or they may be stretched to a greater extent at temperatures above 100 DEG C. Stretching may be effected in two stages. Final stretching may take place in hot air, dry or wet steam, or a heated inert liquid. All or a substantial amount of the residual solvent adhering to the filaments may be removed e.g. by washing or heating, prior to a stretching treatment. The stretched filaments may be cut to form staple fibres and these may be treated with a shrinking agent, e.g. hot water, so as to obtain curled fibres. Small amounts of water may be added to the coagulating bath during the production of the filaments in order to maintain a constant concentration of the dimethyl formamide or acetamide. When the coagulating liquid contains 20-45 per cent by volume of dimethyl acetamide, the filaments obtained are opaque and of dull lustre and low density. They contain microscopic bubbles or cells and have low dyeing affinities. On the other hand, when the coagulating liquid contains 45-70 per cent by volume of dimethyl acetamide, the filaments, after washing, drying, and heat-stretching, are dense and transparent, and have good dyeing affinities. The spinning solution may contain 5-30 per cent or more of the acrylonitrile polymer, and spinning may take place at 25-60 DEG C. Yarns, after stretching, may be twisted and then stabilized by allowing them to shrink freely in boiling water. Examples describe the production and stretching of filaments from solutions of copolymers of acrylonitrile with 2-vinyl pyridine, vinyl acetate, acrylamide, or vinyl a -chloroacetate.
