Abstract

1,002,767. Polyacrylonitrile fibres. TOHO RAYON KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Sep. 12, 1961 [Sep. 24, 1960], No. 32637/61. Heading B5B. Polyacrylonitrile fibres are obtained by spinning a solution of the polymer in aqueous zinc chloride solution of above 50% by weight zinc chloride into an aqueous coagulation bath containing from 10 to 20% by weight zinc chloride, rinsing the coagulated fibres in water at up to 80‹ C., stretching the fibres in water at above 95‹ C., and before the fibres cool or the water content of the fibres changes, relaxing them in contact with water at above 95‹ C. Rinsing may be effected under sufficient tension to stretch the fibres, and after rinsing, the fibres may be dried and then passed through a water bath to readjust their water content prior to stretching. The stretching and relaxation operations may be effected in the same bath, e.g. a boiling water bath. Alternatively stretching and relaxation may be effected in separate baths, the fibre passing over heated rollers to maintain its temperature during transference from one bath to the other.
