Abstract

1,113,051. Stretching acrylonitrile polymer fibres. COURTAULDS Ltd. 27 Aug., 1965 [28 Aug., 1964], No. 35280/64. Heading B5B. Fibres of acrylonitrile polymers containing 85-97% wt. of acrylonitrile units are stretched in steam and immediately thereafter quenched with a liquid coolant at # 30‹ C. The coolant preferably is or contains water, with or without sodium thiocyanate, and may be applied in a bath or as a spray. The coolant temperature may be as low as 0‹ C. The fibres may be prepared by spinning an aqueous sodium thiocyanate solution of the polymer and coagulating with dilute aqueous sodium thiocyanate; they may be stretched to at least 5 times (e.g. 8 times) their original length; and they may subsequently be washed and dried.
