Abstract
1,033,948. Treating synthetic polymer fibres. MONSANTO CO. Nov. 12, 1963 [Nov. 19, 1962], No. 44681/63. Heading B5B. Synthetic polymer fibres which have been formed by a wet spinning process, particularly acrylic fibres, are treated while they are still in their gel state with a solution of a naphthalene disulphonic acid or of an alkali metal salt thereof. The fibres may be composed of at least 80% acrylonitrile and up to 20% of another mono-olefinic monomer copolymerizable therewith, e.g. a copolymer of 94% acrylonitrile and 6% vinyl acetate. They may be composed of a blend of 88% of a copolymer of 94% acrylonitrile and 6% vinyl acetate and 12% of a copolymer of 50% acrylonitrile and 50% methyl vinylpyridine, all percentages being by weight. The acrylic fibres may be wet spun in a conventional manner and may be treated with the sulphonic acid or its salt by the addition of the sulphonic acid or its salt to the conventional finish bath. The process stabilizes the fibres against ultra-violet light and improves their basic dye uptake.
