Use of 2-phenyl-benzazoles as protective agents against ultraviolet radiation outside the textile industry. The present invention relates to the use of substituted 2-phenyl-benzazoles, which contain at least one branched alkyl group as substituents, as effective components in protective agents against ultraviolet radiation or as additives to substrates to be protected from ultra violet radiation.
According to the invention, preference is given to using 2-phenylbenzazole compounds which, apart from the branched alkyl group or groups, have at most unbranched alkyl groups and / or chlorine atoms as benzene nucleus substituents. Among the unbranched alkyl groups, low molecular weight alkyl groups containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms such as the methyl and ethyl groups should be emphasized.
These azole compounds correspond to the formula / N \ (1) R1 C-R2, \ X / in which R is a phenylene radical optionally substituted by alkyl and / or chlorine, in which two adjacent ring carbon atoms are simultaneously members of the azole ring, R2 one optionally by alkyl - and / or chlorine-substituted phenyl radical and X denotes an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or the group -N, the molecule having at least one branched alkyl group as a substituent.
If the benzazoles, as defined above, contain one or two branched alkyl groups and, as further benzene substituents, a maximum of 2 unbranched al: yl groups, they correspond to the formula
EMI0001.0015
where A1 is a branched alkyl group, A2 is an unbranched alkyl group, X is an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or an -N group, m is an integer not exceeding 2 and n is an integer not exceeding 3.
Among these compounds are found, u. a. also because of their easy accessibility, those are particularly valuable which contain a branched alkyl group in the 5- or 4'-position and no further benzene nucleus substituents or at most one low-molecular, unbranched alkyl group located in the 4'- or 5'-position and thus the formula
EMI0001.0023
where A is a branched alkyl group, A: a low molecular weight unbranched alkyl group, X is an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or an -N group and p is an integer of at most 2.
The compounds to be used according to the invention contain one or more branched alkyl groups. These can have one or more branches and contain 3 to, for example, 12 carbon atoms. If the phenylbenzazole molecule contains a single branched alkyl group, this can either be vizebonded to the phenyl radical in the 2-position or to the benzene radical condensed with the azole ring.
Azole compounds with two branched alkyl groups can contain, for example, one each in the phenyl radical and in the benzene radical condensed with the azole ring. The branch can be present at any point in the alkyl radical. In general, it is advantageous if it begins immediately with the carbon atom of the alkyl group bonded to the benzene nucleus, so that this is either secondary [-CH (alkyl) 2] or preferably tertiary [-C (alkyl) 3]. In the simplest case, an isopropyl group [-CH (CH3) 2] is present. As further ver branched remnants come z. B. isobutyl or isoamyl radicals, the branched octyl radical of the formula -C (CH3) 2-CH2-C (CH3) 3 and in particular the tertiary butyl radical of the formula -C (CH3) 3 are possible.
In the above formulas (1), (2) and (3), X represents the addition to the azole ring, i.e. H. in the case of the oxazoles an oxygen atom, in the case of the thiazoles a sulfur atom and in the case of the imidazoles a nitrogen atom which, in addition to the two ring bonds, also has a bond to a hydrogen atom or a substituent. A typical representative of a phenylbenzimidazole derivative is, for example, the compound of the formula
EMI0002.0009
called. The 2-phenyl-benzimidazoles preferably correspond to the formula
EMI0002.0010
wherein R, and R_, have the meaning given above for formula (1) and Y is an alkyl group, e.g.
B. a methyl group or ethyl group, an oxyalkyl group, z. B. denote a ss, γ-dioxypropyl or ss-oxypropyl group, a benzyl radical or, preferably, a hydrogen atom. If the ring nitrogen atom of the imidazole compound is further substituted by a branched alkyl group, no further such group need be present in the molecule.
The 2-phenyl-benzazoles of the composition indicated at the outset can be conveniently prepared as follows: A. From acyl compounds, which are derived on the one hand from benzene carboxylic acids and on the other hand from o-amino oxybenzenes, o-aminomercaptobenzenes or o-di-aminobenzenes, whose one amino group primary and whose other amino group is at most secondary, derive from and which contain at least one branched alkyl group as a substituent, water is split off by heating and! or treatment with dehydrating agents, e.g. B.
EMI0002.0020
The acyl compounds used here as starting materials can be obtained by reacting o-amino oxybenzenes, o-aminomerkaptobenzenes or o-di aminobenzenes of the specified type with benzene carbonic acid halides, preferably the acid chlorides, with at least one of the two starting substances has a branched alkyl group as a substituent. The elimination of water from the acyl compounds can z.
B. by mere heating, but expediently done with the help of a dehydrating agent such as zinc chloride or boric acid.
B. acyl compounds, which are derived on the one hand from benzenecarboxylic acids and on the other hand from o-nitrooxybenzenes, o-nitromerkaptobenzenes or o-nitroamino benzenes with at most secondary amino groups and which contain at least one branched alkyl group, are reduced with dehydrating Re, z. B. at 90 to 100, treated with tin and hydrochloric acid. The acyl compounds (esters, thioesters or
Amides) can be prepared from the nitro compounds of the specified type and benzene carboxylic acid halides.
C. o-Aminooxybenzenes, o-Aminomerkaptobenzenes or o-Diaminobenzenes, one amino group of which is primary and the other amino group of which is at most secondary, are used together with benzene carboxylic acids or suitable functional derivatives of these, e.g. B. alkyl esters, preferably in the presence of a water-releasing agent, heated, at least one of the two starting materials containing a branched alkyl group as a substituent,
e.g. B.

You can work in the absence of solvents or in the presence of organic solvents with a high boiling point. Here, too, boric acid, a catalytically active water-splitting agent, does a good job. Orthophosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid and polyphosphoric acid are also suitable for this purpose.
D. If 2-phenyl-benzimidazoles. which are further substituted by a branched alkyl group on one of the imidazole nitrogen atoms are to be prepared, they can be prepared from the corresponding 1-amino- or 1-nitro-2-N-alkylbenzoylamino-benzenes or produce the 1-amino-2-alkylamino-benzenes.
But you can also 2-phenyl-benzimidazoles, which contain an imidazole ring nitrogen atom bonded to a hydrogen atom, with alkylating agents which contain a branched alkyl group, z. B.

This reaction is expediently carried out in the presence of an acid-binding agent.
With regard to the use of the azole compounds as a means of protecting non-textile materials against ultraviolet radiation (light protection), three possibilities can be distinguished, which can be carried out separately or in combination: A.
The light stabilizer is incorporated into a substrate with the purpose of protecting this substrate from light attack by ultraviolet rays, with a change in one or more physical properties, e.g. a discoloration, a change in the tensile strength , Embrittlement and / or chemical reactions caused by ultra violet rays, such as oxidation processes, are to be prevented. The incorporation before or during the manufacture of the substrate position or afterwards by a suitable method, for. B. go through a Fixierungsver, similar to a dyeing process.
B. The light stabilizer is incorporated into a substrate in order to protect one or more other substances incorporated into the substrate, such as e.g. B. dyes, auxiliaries to protect, whereby the substrate protection mentioned under A can occur at the same time.
C. The light stabilizer is incorporated into a filter layer with the purpose of protecting a substrate directly beneath the bar or at some distance (e.g. in a shop window) from the attack of ultraviolet rays, whereby the filter layer is solid (film , Foil, finish) or semi-solid (cream, oil, wax).
Non-textile materials that can be protected include: a) Fibers that are not textile materials that can be of animal origin, such as feathers, hair, and also hides and hides and leather obtained from the latter through natural or chemical tanning and manufactured from them Manufactures, also those of vegetable origin, such as straw, wood, wood pulp, or fiber materials consisting of compacted fibers, such as paper, cardboard or compressed wood, as well as materials made from the latter, also paper pulps used for the production of paper (e.g. Dutch pulp) ; b) coating agents for paper, e.g.
B. those based on starch or casein or those based on synthetic resin, for example made of vinyl acetate or derivatives of acrylic acid; c) varnishes and films of different composition, z. B. those made of acetyl cellulose, cellulose propionate, cellulose butyrate and cellulose mixtures, such as. B. cellulose acetate butyrate and cellulose acetate propionate, also nitrocellulose, vinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, alkyd resins, polyethylene, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile, polyester.
A particularly important use for the azole compounds is their incorporation into packaging materials, especially the known, transparent films made of regenerated cellulose (viscose) or acetyl cellulose. In this case, it is usually expedient to add the light stabilizer to the mass from which these films are made.
d) natural or synthetic resin, e.g. B. epoxy resins, polyester resins, vinyl resins, polystyrene resins, alkyd resins, aldehyde resins such as phenol, urea or melamine formaldehyde condensation products, and emulsions made from synthetic resins (z. B. oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions ). Here, the light stabilizer can expediently be used before or during the polymerization or polycondensation. Synthetic resins reinforced with glass fibers and laminates made from them may also be mentioned.
e) Hydrophobic substances, containing oil, fat or wax, such as candles, floor wax, floor stains or other wood stains, furniture polishes, especially those intended for the treatment of light-colored, possibly bleached wooden surfaces.
f) Natural, rubber-like materials such as rubber, balata, gutta-percha or synthetic vulcanizable materials such as polychloroprene, olefinic polysulphides, polybutadiene or copolymers of butadiene-styrene (e.g.
Buna S) or butadiene-acrylonitrile (z. B. Buna N), which can also contain fillers, pigments, vulcanization accelerators, etc. and in which the addition of the azole compounds according to the invention retards aging and thus the change in plasticity properties and the brittleness will prevent.
g) For the production of filter layers for photographic purposes, in particular for color photography.
It goes without saying that the light protection agents are not only suitable for uncolored, but also for dyed or pigmented non-textile materials. The light protection also affects the dyes, which in some cases significantly improves the lightfastness. If necessary, the treatment with the light protection agent and the coloring or pigmentation process can be combined with one another.
Depending on the type of non-textile material to be treated. Requirements for effectiveness and durability and other conditions, the amounts of the light stabilizer to be incorporated into the materials in question can vary within fairly wide limits, for example about 0.01 to 10 ;; ',, preferably 0.1 to 2 of the material which is to be protected directly against ultraviolet radiation.
The phenylbenzazoles to be used according to the invention are particularly useful as protective agents for the skin against ultraviolet radiation. They can be processed in a manner known per se to form stable and ready-to-use cosmetic preparations. They are expediently mixed with carrier substances, emulsified or, preferably, dissolved in such. Such carriers can be in liquid or semi-solid form. These include liquid organic diluents, such as organic solvent medium such as alcohols or ketones, eg.
B. ethanol, isopropanol, glycerine, cyclohexanol, methylcyclohexanol, also trichlorethylene, gasoline, esters of vegetable or animal origin such as vegetable or animal oils and fats, z. B. peanut oil, cocoa butter, lanolin. Mineral solvents such as paraffin oil, white mineral oil, petroleum jelly or petroleum jelly can also be used.
If an aqueous dispersion of the protective agent is desired, it can be finely dispersed directly in water with the aid of suitable dispersants or completely or partially dissolved in an organic carrier (see above) and then dispersed or emulsified in water. Of course, other substances can be added to such mixtures and preparations such. B. skin care products, insect repellants, deodorants, fragrances, dyes. A suitable choice of one or more carriers and, if appropriate, further additives give solutions, ointments, pastes, creams, oils or emulsions.
With the help of suitable solvents, for example fluorochloroalkanes, spray preparations (so-called aerosol sprays) can also be produced, which are stored in closed containers and from these by actuating a valve directly onto the to be protected skin areas can be applied.
The 2-phenyl-benz-azoles to be used as protective agents according to the present invention are particularly suitable as skin protective agents, because they are readily soluble in organic solvents such as those used for cosmetic purposes and, on the other hand, ultraviolet reddening of the skin Absorb rays with a wavelength of up to about 320 to a large extent, but not affect the rays of higher wavelengths from 320 to about 400 m, whose tanning effect is usually desired.
