Abstract
A process for the production of highly oriented and ordered film of low void content comprises heating a biaxially oriented acrylonitrile polymer film, formed from a coalesced acrylonitrile polymer film, at a temperature between 90 DEG C. and the temperature beyond which substantial thermal degradation of the polymer occurs, for a time sufficient to raise the density of the film to at least 1,170 g/cc. while maintaining the film under biaxial tension sufficient to restrict dimensional change and thereafter cooling the film and relaxing the tension. The heating may be effected in a non-reactive gaseous atmosphere (e.g. air) or liquid medium (e.g. ethylene glycol). The invention also comprises a biaxially oriented acrylonitrile polymer film of density at least 1,170 g/cc., a relative void content of less than 20 mm.2 (measured by low angle X-ray diffraction patterns) and orientation angles no greater than 80 DEG when measured in both of two mutually perpendicular directions in the plane of the film using an X-ray beam impinging on to an edge of the film; preferably the film has a pneumatic impact strength (23 DEG C. and 50% humidity) of at least 2 kg.-cm. per mil. thickness, a water vapour permeability no greater than 70 g/100m2/hr/mil. and a CO2 permeability no greater than 0,001 g/100m2/hr/mil. The oriented films of the invention may be laminated with wood, metal, cloth and to these materials in the form of a metallized film; various laminated articles are mentioned.
