Abstract

Normally crystalline polyolefine films, filaments and like products are oriented by heatng the product to a temperature at least 10 DEG C. above the crystalline melting temperature of the polyolefine, cooling the product to a temperature below, but not more than 12 DEG C. below, the crystalline melting temperature and almost immediately stretching the product in at least one direction while maintaining its temperature between the crystalline melting temperature of the polyolefine and a temperature 12 DEG C. below, preferably at a temperature 5-12 DEG C. below, the crystalline melting temperature. The product may be formed by extrusion at a temperature at least 10 DEG C. above the crystalline melting-point of the polyolefine, and may be kept at the extrusion temperature up to the time it is cooled to within 12 DEG C. below the crystalline melting-point. The crystalline melting-point is defined as the lowest temperature at which complete disappearance of the crystalline structure of the polymer is observed under a visible light microscope using polarized light when the crystalline product is heated at a rate of about 2 DEG C. per minute under the microscope. Crystalline polyolefine is defined as a polyolefine which exhibits at least 10% crystallinity at room temperature as determined from X-ray diffraction patterns. The method of carrying out the determination is described. The polyolefine may be polyethylene, particularly high-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyisopropylethylene or polyisobutylethylene. The product is stretched by at least 1.5 times its initial length in the direction of stretch, and is then advantageously cooled, preferably to a temperature below 75 DEG C., while maintaining sufficient tension on it to prevent shrinkage, the tension thereafter being released. Films are preferably stretched in two mutually perpendicular directions, preferably simultaneously. In an example, a film having a crystalline melting-point of 128 DEG C. and formed by melt-extruding a polyethylene having, when annealed, a crystallinity of 87% and a density of 0.95, is heated to 138 DEG C. and then cooled to 119 DEG C., at which temperature it is stretched simultaneously at a ratio of 2.3 in the longitudinal direction and 2.2 in the transverse direction; finally, it is cooled to 50-60 DEG C. under sufficient tension to prevent shrinkage. Films stretched as described above are improved with respect to durability, tensil strength, stiffness and transparency and are particularly suitable for packaging. Specification 741,962 is referred to.
