Abstract

1,131,523. Polyethylene terephthalate film; polyethylene terephthalate laminates. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 11 July, 1966 [12 July, 1965], No. 31059/66, Headings B5B and B5N. [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] A heat-set polyethylene terephthalate film is non-fibrillating, is predominantly unidirectionally oriented by an elongation of at least 4 x the original dimension, and has an I.V. of at least 0À65, a tensile strength of at least 50,000 p.s.i., a shrinkage at 105‹ C. not exceeding 10% in the direction of orientation, and an elongation at break of at least 50% at a stretch rate of 100%/min. in the direction transverse to orientation. Stretching and heat-setting are effected conventionally, e.g. at temperature above 80‹ C. and 150‹ C. respectively. The film may be partially or wholly restrained from shrinking during heat-setting. A laminate comprises a film as above, which has been vacuum coated with aluminium, and adhered on the metal coated side to an adhesive coated film, also as above.
