Abstract

Biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate film having a high tensile strength on the longitudinal direction is made from an unstretched amorphous polyethylene terephthalate film by first stretching it transversely to a stretch ratio in the range 2.65:1 to 3.2:1 and then longitudinally to a stretch ratio greater than 5.05:1 at a temperature above 120 DEG C. and at a rate of stretching of at least 5,000%/min. Preferably the transverse stretch ratio does not exceed 3.0:1, transverse stretching being effected at about 80 DEG -100 DEG C. and longitudinal stretching at 120 DEG -160 DEG C. The rate of stretching in the longitudinal direction is desirably less than 100,000%/min. Partial shrinkage of the film may be permitted in the transverse direction during longitudinal stretching. In this case, the transverse stretch first applied to the film may be at a stretch ratio greater than 3.2:1, provided that the shrinkage which takes place during longitudinal stretching brings down the overall transverse extension to 3.2:1 or less. After stretching, the films may be heat-set in known manner while held at, e.g. 150 DEG -230 DEG C. Films so made normally have a yield strength of 30,000 p.s.i. or greater, a tensile break strength of at least 35,000 p.s.i. with an elongation at break not above about 25% and in the transverse direction a yield strength of at least 8,000 p.s.i. A voided film may be made by the use of a higher rate of transverse stretching. Specification 811,066 is referred to.
