Abstract
1,012,602. Stretching polyvinyl alcohol films. KURASHIKI RAYON KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Nov. 7, 1962 [Nov. 18, 1961], No. 42055/62. Heading B5B. The moisture content of a polyvinyl alcohol film is adjusted to a value within the range 10 to 60% by weight (calculated on the basis that the weight of the dry film is 100%), the film is stretched at a temperature below 60‹ C. either simultaneously in the longitudinal and transverse directions, or in one of these directions only, the film in this case being held under sufficient tension in the direction in which it is not to be stretched to prevent shrinkage in the latter direction, the extent of the stretching being in either case such that the area of the film after stretching is 130 to 300% of the original area of the film before stretching and the film is thereafter heat set at a temperature of 140 to 250‹ C. while being prevented from shrinking either longitudinally or transversely. The film may contain a minor proportion of a plasticizer such as glycerine and also an additive such as a surface active agent. The heat setting may be effected by passing the film through a chamber maintained at 190‹ C. in 4 minutes or through a chamber maintained at 220‹ C. in 2 minutes. The treatment increases the tensile strength and the moisture resistance of the film.
