732,810. Treating wood. HUDSON, M. S. March 20, 1953, No. 7793/53. Class 140. In the vapour drying of wood in a closed space with a potentially explosive organic vapour at elevated temperatures and subsequently admitting air into the closed space in an amount such as to produce an explosive mixture with the organic vapour, steam is introduced into the closed space before or during the admission of air until an initial pressure not exceeding 20 pounds per square inch is set up in the closed space and the partial pressure of steam therein is at least equal to the partial pressure of the organic vapour. The steam may be introduced to break the vacuum applied at the end of the drying process ; in order to prevent undesirable absorption of water in cases where a relatively high degree of drying has been effected, the closed drying space may be first opened to the atmosphere followed by introduction of steam. A preservative treatment may follow the drying in the closed space, the admission of the preservative immediately following the admission of steam. Specifications 655,062 and 655,063 are referred to.
