Abstract

Carbon, e.g. wood charcoal, produced by carbonization of solid carbonaceous materials, is activated by subjecting it to the action of sulphur vapour between 450 DEG and 550 DEG C. The temperature of carbonization may be sufficiently low for the carbon to retain a high volatile content, and the treatment with sulphur vapour may be continued until sulphur ceases to be absorbed.
