Abstract

Tobacco treatment process is according to parent patent with the addition or modification which comprises introducing the tobacco into an impregnation zone, simultaneously introducing, so as to contact the tobacco a vapour current of a compound (I) (pref. an opt. halogenated hydrocarbon) with a b.p. at atmospheric pressure of -50 to +80 degrees C, the temp. of th tobacco and the vapour being respectively lowre and higher than the b.p of (I) at the pressure in the zone. The speed of introduction of (I) into the zone is regulated with reference to the ratio of introduction of the tobacco so that the wt. ratio of (I) in the impregnated tobacco is 5-200 pts. wt. (I)/100 pts. wt. tobacco (dry wt). The impregnated tobacco is then sharply expanded pref. by contact with a stream of warm gas. This process is quicker than that of the parent patent (which used a liquid for impregnation) and allows the amount of (I) used to be more accurately determined.
