Abstract

Tobacco dust and water is subjected to a mechanical disintegrating treatment in the presence of water so that the cellulose in the tobacco is hydrated fibrillated to form a paste-like, fibrous, plastic mass which is shaped, e.g. by extrusion through a nozzle (see Division B4-B5), under pressure and without substantial separation of water, into a thin, preferably filamentary, web and dried. The treatment may be carried out in the presence of a vacuum or of an inert gas, such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide, which may be changed during treatment to remove undesirable, volatile substances from the tobacco. The tobacco mass preferably contains between 40% and 60% of water during mechanical treatment but may contain from 20% to 80%. The length of the fibres after treatment is about 1 mm.
