Abstract

1,009,765. Treating pulp. BLACK-CLAWSON CO.Inc. July 17, 1962 [July 17,1961], No. 27417/62. Headings D2A and D2W. Apparatus for treating cellulosic material in the preparation of pulp comprises a tapered perforate casing 65, a co-operating feed screw 60, and a pipe 70 extending from the discharge end of the feed screw which pipe has a cross-sectional area over the greater part 72 of its length which is less than the annular area between the feed screw at its discharge end and the casing 65. Cellulosic material e.g. wood chips, fed through the apparatus is compressed between the flights 62 of the screw and the casing 65 sufficiently to exclude substantially all voids and liquid. Upon discharge from the end of the feed screw 60 the material is enabled to expand slightly in the tapered region 71 of the pipe 70 without exposing it to the atmosphere or liquid before being recompressed into a substantially solid plug of material in the pipe 72. This plug of material is discharged inside a frusto-conical housing 75 into which treating liquor may be admitted through inlet openings 77. The action of compression, expansion and recompression which takes place upon the fibres in passing through the unit is effective in causing defibration of the cellulosic material. Plant is described and shown in Fig. 1 incorporating two such feed screw units 20, 26 as described above. Wood chips from a hopper 10 are fed by a metering screw conveyer 12 to a mixing conveyer 13 in which the chips are pretreated with caustic liquor admitted through inlet 17. The pretreated material is fed into a feed screw unit 20 in which a substantial proportion of the natural juice of the material together with the caustic liquor is removed and passed to drain. The unit 20 discharges into an inclined digester 22 the material being immediately submerged under caustic liquor thereing when discharged from the feed screw unit 20. A further feed screw unit 26 removes a substantial proportion of the liquor from the material which then passes by means of conveyer 27 to the next desired station of treatment, e.g. defibring apparatus not shown.
