Abstract

Active carbon fibres used as adsorbent for deodorisation and purification of liquids or gases, esp. air, are produced by (a) treating cellulosic fibres with a phosphorus cpd. capable of reacting with them; (b) heating the fibres at 200-350 degrees C until the fibre weight is reduced by 40-75% and the phosphorus content is reduced to is not >70% P; and (c) subjecting the fibres to activation of 450-1000 degrees C in an atmos. contg. >=5 vol.% of water vapour until the fibre weight is reduced by 65-95% and the phosphorus content to 10 wt. P. The use of active carbon in the form of fibres is more convenient than in the form of granules or powder, because of its superior filtering properties, absence of dusting, etc. The active carbon fibres have high adsorptivity and mechanical strength. Mfr. is simpler than known methods, esp. the activation time is reduced.
