Abstract
Precursor-polyacrylonitrile fibre material is submitted to tensionless non-burning oxidation, pref. in air for 1-8 hours at 200-250 degrees C, followed by carbonising in non-oxidising atmosphere at temperature at least 700 degrees C, the fibres having been stretched before continuous oxidation step. Continuous oxidation may be followed by step-wise oxidation.
