Carbon filament is produced by the carbonization of a filamentary polymer or copolymer of polyacrylonitrile said carbonization including a step in which the blackened :filament, i.e. the product obtained by exposing the material in an oxidizing atmosphere to a temperature between 190‹ and 300‹ C. for a time sufficient for oxygen to permeate right through the filaments, is heated in a protective atmosphere up to a temperature above 900‹ C., in which step the rate of heating is not less than 300‹ C./hr. A preferred rate is not less than 1000‹ C./hr. and may be in the range 1500‹ to 30,000‹ C./hr. Once the temperature of the filament is above 1100‹ C. the rate -of cheating may be increased, e.g. to approximately 250,000‹ C./hr. The filament may be graphitized by heating at a -final temperature of 2300‹ to 3000‹ C., and the heating step may be performed in a protective atmosphere with carbon -as a gettering material. Tension may be applied to the filament during the blackening step and/or during the graphitization.
