Abstract

1477035 Carbon fibres JAPAN EXLAN CO Ltd 4 July 1974 [5 July 1973] 29794/74 Heading C1A Carbonaceous fibrous material is produced from acrylic fibrous material, which is crack free or has cracks which number less than 5 per cm. per filament and a coefficient of variation in fineness between single filaments of less than 15% and which consists of filaments made from a homopolymer of acrylonitrile or a copolymer of acrylonitrile containing at least 85 mole per cent of acrylonitrile and another ethylenically unsaturated compound, by heating to thermally stabilize and thereafter carbonize the material. Preferably in the thermal stabilizing step the filaments are heated in an oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. air, at 150-400‹ C. followed by carbonizing or carbonizing and then graphitizing in a non-oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. N 2 , above 800‹ C. The acrylic fibrous starting material can be produced by extrusion of a spinning solution consisting of the above homo or copolymers and a solvent through spinnerette orifices into air or an inert gas, followed by coagulation into filaments, washing, stretching and drying. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifccations 1,339,744 and 1,200,492.
