Abstract

1,214,807. Carbon fibres. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 7 Dec., 1967 [31 Dec., 1966], No. 58490/66. Heading ClA. Carbonaceous fibre is made by pre-oxidizing a polymeric fibre in an oxidizing atmosphere and pyrolysing the fibre in an inert atmosphere to drive off the majority of the fibre constituents except carbon and subjecting the fibre at any stage of the process to a surface removal step in which the surface layer of the fibre is removed, together with flaws therein, whereby a stronger fibre is produced. In an example, polyaccrylonitrile fibre is stretched to 3 times its length while immersed in boiling water, oxidized in air at 227‹ C. for 7 hours, and heated at ¢-‹ C. per minute to 1000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere to give C fibre optionally followed by graphitization at 2750‹ C. Removal of the surface may be effected after heat-treatment by cathodic etching or by chemical treatment in gas, liquid or vapour, or before heat-treatment by dissolution of the surface of the polymer in a solvent such as dimethylformamide or ethylene carbonate. Cathodic etching is performed by suspending the fibre in an inert atmosphere at low pressure and maintaining a large potential difference between the fibres and a plurality of electrodes so that surface removal is effected by bombardment with excited ions. Surface etching in the gas phase may be effected by heat-treatment in air, oxygen, CO 2 or H 2 and in the liquid phase, by a KNO 3 melt, cone. H 2 50 4 + conc. HN0 3 , or metals in which C is soluble, e.g. molten Fe or Ni, K 2 Cr 2 O 7 + H 3 PO 4 at 97-125‹ C., or by electrolysis of certain solutions using the fibres as electrodes.
