Abstract
1405379 Carbon fibres O SCHWANHAUSSER G SCHWANHAUSSER and H SCHWANHAUSSER [trading as SCHWAN-BLEISTIFT-FABRIK SCHWANHAUSSER & CO] 29 May 1973 [7 June 1972] 25403/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division B6] Pencil leads are made by producing a monofilamentary member from a material comprising graphite in combination with one of polyacrylonitrile and its copolymers, polyamides or cellulose xanthogenate, subjecting the filament to oxidative thermal cross-linking at 200‹- 300‹ C. in an O 2 -containing atmosphere, carbonizing the filament at 300 to 1200‹ C. and then cutting the filament into pencil leads of required lengths. The starting material may also include carbon black, and the filament, after carbonization may further be graphitized in an inert atmosphere. The filaments may also be stretched prior to the thermal cross-linking and held under tension during the carbonizing steps.
