Abstract
A porous metal compact such as a filter is made by gas plating a mass of randomly disposed organic carrier strands with a metal such as Fe, Ni or Cu followed by decomposition of the organic strands to leave the hollow metal jackets which are compressed to form a porous compact. The organic strands may be natural fibres such as cotton or synthetic such as viscose and cellulosic fibres and the gas plating is effected either on the individual fibres or on a mat of the fibres by the thermal decomposition of the corresponding metal carbonyl. After the plating step which is effected in an inert gas such as CO2 or N2 the coated mat of fibres is heated to 1400-1500 DEG F. in the case of Ni on cellulose fibres, and after cooling, the remaining Ni jackets are pressed and sintered. A woven metal cloth may also be sintered on to the malted metal jackets as a reinforcing means.
