Abstract

A method for the production of a layered self-supporting filter element in sheet or cylindrical form comprises the steps of providing a feltable fleece formed from fibres which are capable of being carded, felting the fleece, impregnating the fleece, either before or after felting, with a chemical binder, conditioning the impregnated felted fleece by pre-heating, compressing the conditioned fleece into layers, and finally hardening the binder. The cylindrical shape may be made by compressing the fleece into layers by winding it on to a cylindrical former. Apparatus for carrying out the method is depicted in the drawing (not shown).
