Abstract

1,212,843. Winding filamentous mats. AMERICAN AIR FILTER CO. Inc. 15 Nov., 1967 [18 Nov., 1966], No. 52046/67. Heading B8G. [Also in Division D1] An expanded filamentous mat is made by collecting filaments on a collector, e.g. a rotating drum; applying first and second binders to first and second portions respectively of the mat, the viscosity of one of the binders being greater than that of the other binder at a selected temperature; releasing the filaments from the collector, e.g. by slitting, so as to form a planar mat; stretching the mat in a direction transverse to the lay of the filaments so that some of the filaments curl and expand the thickness of the mat; heating the expanded mat to the selected temperature to soften the binder in one portion of the mat; reorientating filaments of the portion where the binder is softened; and hardening the softened binder. The first and second mat portions may be formed by collecting the filaments at selected angles of lay which may be the same portions or different. The angle of lay may be zero in some portions of the mat. The different lay angles may be formed by varying the traverse rate of the yarn supplying device. The mat may be compressed whilst the binder is softened. The binder may be a solution urea-formaldehyde resin. The filaments may be of glass.
