Abstract
Carbon fibres produced by (1) heating polyamide fibres in air at 160-400 degrees C and then (2) pyrolysis at 1,000 degrees C in inert atmosphere. During (1) fibres are held under tension. Heating rate to stage (2) is 1/2 C-5 degrees C/min. Stage (3) of graphitisation after pyrolysis is performed in inert atmosphere at greater than 2,500 C. Produces carbon fibres of strengths suitable for use as reinforcements.
