620,023. Preserving wood. O'DELL, A. E. (Saxen, R.). Jan. 2, 1947, No. 159. [Class 140] Wood is preserved by subjecting it to the action of a disinfecting gas, or of a disinfecting gas and steam together, at a high temperature (not high enough to destroy the structure of the wood) whereby the gas penetrates the wood, then stopping the heating while continuing the gas treatment. The disinfecting gas may be flue-gas from burning vegetable fuel, including black coal. To facilitate the penetration of the gas or steam the wood may be subjected to reduced pressure prior to the preserving treatment. The disinfecting gas or steam may be applied to the wood under pressure higher than atmospheric. The treatment with gas or steam may be combined with a treatment for drying the wood. In an example, a temperature of 200‹ C. was used.
