Abstract

Carbon black is improved for synthetic rubber compounding by first treating the carbon black to increase its volatile content and subsequently decreasing the volatile content of the treated black until the volatile content is substantially the same as the initial value. The volatile content may be increased, e.g. (1) by heating at 750-800 DEG F. under atmospheric conditions, (2) by treating with nitric acid or (3) by treating with ozone. Thus, carbon black (volatile content 4-7 per cent) is heated in air at 750 DEG F. for 1 hour until the volatile content is increased by at least 2 per cent and the treated black is then heated at 1200 DEG F. for 1/2 hour in absence of air or in a neutral or reducing atmosphere. The carbon black should be kept dry between the two steps or dried prior to the second. Specification 596,785 is referred to.
