Abstract
Titanium-nitrogen compounds are treated with diluted sulphuric acid in quantity not materially greater than that necessary to combine with the nitrogen and the impurities at a pressure greater than atmospheric and at a suitable temperature, the products being titanium oxide and ammonium sulphate. In an example 1.33 parts of 50 per cent sulphuric acid is employed with 1 part of nitride at a heat necessary to produce a pressure of 25 atmospheres. The titanium oxide obtained contains a small quantity of nitrogen and may be treated again with sulphuric acid under pressure to remove the nitrogen, the acid liquor obtained being used for treating fresh nitride. Specification 115,020 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), is not limited to the use of a small quantity of sulphuric acid, and the titanium may therefore be converted into sulphate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Titanium-nitrogen compounds are treated with diluted sulphuric acid in quantity not materially greater than that required to combine with the nitrogen and the impurities at a pressure greater than atmospheric and at a suitable temperature, the products being titanium oxide and ammonium sulphate.
