Abstract
In the precipitation of calcium carbonate from calcium saccharate solution, the solution is divided, one part being oversaturated with carbon dioxide in counterflow and then being united with the other part, the two parts being so proportioned that the resulting mixture is slightly alkaline. In general 90 per cent of the solution may be treated with carbon dioxide, but if the gases used are very rich in CO2 about 80 per cent only may be so treated. The saccharate solutions may be those obtained in the sugar industry or those formed from compounds such as dolomite by treating the calcined compound with a sugar solution to remove the lime as calcium saccharate, with recovery of magnesium oxide. Treatment of the calcined dolomite with sugar solution, and decomposition of the saccharate solution with carbon dioxide are carried out at temperatures between 20 and 40 DEG C., say at 36 DEG C., whereby easily settling precipitates are obtained.ALSO:In the treatment with carbon dioxide of calcium saccharate solutions obtained in the sugar industry, the solution is divided, one part being oversaturated with carbon dioxide in counterflow and then being united with the other part, the two parts being so proportioned that the resulting mixture is slightly alkaline. This method of treatment facilitates the complete precipitation of calcium carbonate. In general 90 per cent of the solution may be treated with carbon dioxide, but if the gases used are very rich in CO2, 80 per cent only may be so treated. The treatment is carried out at temperatures between 2 and 40 DEG C. to obtain an easily settling precipitate.
