Abstract
In the treatment of an oxide calcine containing a mixture of CaO and MgO with a readily soluble magnesium salt solution such as the chloride, nitrate, or acetate to obtain a calcium salt solution and magnesium oxide, slightly, say 1 per cent, less magnesium salt solution is used than is theoretically necessary so that the final calcium product (CaCO3) may be free of magnesium and fluorine. A fraction, say \ba1/8\be, of the magnesium salt solution is first added to convert the CaO present to Ca(OH)2 and the remainder then added to effect the main reaction which is promoted by agitation. After separation of solids the calcium salt solution is treated with NH3 and CO2 or ammonium carbonate using slight excess of NH3 to precipitate calcium carbonate and obtain an ammonium salt solution which is then reacted with the said solids at an elevated temperature to recover ammonia and magnesium salt solution for reuse, and give as solid end product the MgO derived from the calcine. A flow sheet for the process is given.
