Abstract

In the production of sodium aluminate solutions by digesting silica-containing oxides or hydrates of aluminium such as bauxite with preferably concentrated sodium hydroxide solution containing sodium carbonate, the digesting is performed in the presence of such a quantity of the oxides or hydroxides of barium, calcium, strontium, magnesium, zinc or mixtures thereof that not only is silica precipitated, but also not less of the carbon dioxide present than that which has been absorbed by the lye during the process. The lye should contain less than 14 per cent of sodium p carbonate reckoned on the total soda present. Thereby, crystallization of sodium carbonate during concentration of the lye is prevented. The bases, and sodium carbonate necessary to replace small quantities of sodium hydroxide lost are preferably added to the extraction kier. Barium, strontium and calcium hydroxides should be used as a dried slaked powder, and may be mixed with the bauxite. Zinc may be used as a burnt oxide. An example relates to the use of slaked burnt dolomite.
