Abstract

In the production of alumina from an alkaline-earth metal aluminate such as calcium aluminate, the latter is treated with sufficient acid only to combine with the alkaline-earth metal, and the liberated aluminium hydroxide is treated with alkali such as caustic soda or sodium carbonate to obtain a solution of alkali aluminate from which pure alumina may be precipitated by known means. When nitric acid is used for the first step, the calcium &c. sulphate formed remains with the impurity residue after the alkali treatment. A slight excess of alkali above that required to form the compound Me AlO2 is preferably used.
