Abstract
In the extraction of alkaline-earth aluminates with preferably hot alkali carbonate solutions with subsequent precipitation of alumina, excess alkali carbonate is used and the solution obtained, preferably after separating the residue, is treated with calcium oxide or hydroxide to remove silica. The quantity of lime added must be in excess of that corresponding to the excess of alkali carbonate present by an amount equal to at least 12 and preferably 25-30 times the amount of the dissolved silicic acid. Also the amount of excess lime must not be less than 6 nor appreciably greater than 17,5 kg. CaO per cubic metre of solution. If desired the lime may be added prior to extraction either to the alkaline-earth aluminate or to the alkali carbonate solution. In treating solutions low in silicic acid, precipitation is improved by raising the content of dissolved silica to 0,35 kg. SiO2 per cubic metre, as by addition of sodium silicate. Alumina may be precipitated from the purified solution by carbonic acid. Tabulated examples illustrating the working of the process are given. Specification 232,930, [Class 1 (iii), Oxides &c., Metallic], is referred to.
