Abstract

Alkali aluminates; alumina.-Alkali aluminates are obtained by heating aluminous earth, such as bauxite, with calcium carbonate and a small proportion of an alkali salt, such as sodium sulphate, double aluminates being first obtained, which are decomposed on subsequent washing with sodium carbonate solution. The proportion of calcium carbonate should be enough to combine with the alumina and also with the impurities. The product is leached, preferably in two stages, with sodium carbonate solution, sodium aluminate being obtained, which is treated by auto-precipitation or carbonation, or both, to obtain the alumina. To avoid solution of the silica, the sodium carbonate is used in the ratio Al2O3 : Na2O=1: 10, the concentration being 75-100 grm. Na2CO3 per litre.
