Abstract

In an electrolytic process of producing gallium from an aqueous alkali-metal aluminate solution containing dissolved gallium (see Group XXXVI) part of the dissolved aluminium values of the solution is insolubilized which may be done by mixing hydrated lime or quicklime with the aqueous solution whereby calcium aluminate is formed. Sufficient of the dissolved aluminium values should be insolubilized so that the atomic ratio of dissolved aluminium and dissolved gallium of the resultant solution is in the range of from 25 to 1 to 100 to 1. Alumina and gallium oxide are co-precipitated by adding to the resultant solution an acid or acid salt, preferably carbon dioxide in the form of gas, carbonic acid or sodium bicarbonate.
