Abstract

A mixture of hydrated lime and hemihydrated calcium sulphate is prepared by hydrating quicklime admixed with dihydrated calcium sulphate in a closed system under such conditions that the dihydrate is converted into the hemihydrate while the lime is hydrated. Water or steam is added to the mixture to initiate the reaction and the proportions of dihydrated calcium sulphate and lime are so adjusted that the calcium sulphate supplies the remaining water necessary for hydration. The process may be carried out in batches in a closed vessel, or as a continuous process in a chamber with sealed entrances and exits.
