Abstract
In making cement mortar or concrete, caustic soda or caustic potash is added to pulverized slag to the extent of 5 to 8 per cent or 7 to 11 per cent respectively calculated on the gauging water. It may be added in solution in the water or as equimolecular proportions of mutually reacting bodies such as sodium carbonate and calcium hydroxide. These bodies, of which ten-sevenths of the theoretical amount are used, so as to compensate for the incompleteness of the reaction, may be added dry to the slag or to the gauging water from which the resulting carbonate may be filtered. There may be added gypsum as a retarder and sodium silicate and calcium fluoride. In examples, (1) a mortar is made by mixing 750 gr. of sand and 250 gr. of ground slag with 103 c.c. of a 6 per cent solution of caustic soda; (2) a concrete is made by mixing as aggregate 1200 litres of air-cooled slag with a mortar consisting of 400 kg. of finely ground slag, 15 kg. of hydrated lime, 21 kg. of anhydrous sodium carbonate and 162 litres of water.
