Abstract
Steam-hardened concrete products are made with a binder of Portland cement and finely dispersed clay. The treatment with steam under pressure causes the clay to react with the lime liberated in the cement to form calcium hydrosilicate. In an example 60 parts of cement are mixed with 40 parts of clay containing 50,2 per cent of silicic acid. The clay may, after being dried and powdered, be added to the dry cement, to the other dry ingredients or to the dry mixture, or it may be dispersed in the mixing water. Accelerators such as soluble metallic salts, especially chlorides and salts of calcium sodium and magnesium may be added. Sugar also acts as an accelerator and renders the mixture more plastic. Other additions such as glue or gelatine improve the imperviousness to water. The invention is applicable to the production of asbestos-cement products, porous concrete, wood (sawdust) filled concrete, slag and pumice slabs, &c.
