Abstract

A composition for use in the production of a structural material (see Group X) comprises exfoliated vermiculite or a mixture containing it, and a synthetic resinous binder, particularly coumarone or urea-formaldehyde, the urea-formaldehyde being preferably used as a syrup mixed with sulphonated castor oil and with a sulphonic acid catalyst. The mix may include aluminium silicate, sodium silicofluoride, zinc, magnesium or calcium oxide, hydroxide or chloride, hydraulic cement such as Portland cement and plaster of Paris, chalk, limestone or clay, or a fibrous material such as sawdust, peat, straw, reeds, flax shives, coffee grounds, asbestos or cork, may be incorporated.ALSO:A composition for use in the production of a structural material (see Group X) comprises exfoliated vermiculite or a mixture containing it, and a binder, which may be sodium silicate, calcium caseinate, bitumen or a synthetic resin such as coumarone resin or urea-formaldehyde resin. The mix may include aluminium silicate, sodium silicofluoride, zinc, magnesium or calcium oxide, hydroxide or chloride, hydraulic cement such as Portland cement and plaster of Paris, chalk, limestone or clay, or a fibrous material such as sawdust, peat, straw, reeds, flax shives, coffee grounds, asbestos or cork may be incorporated. The product may be fireproofed (see Group VIII).
