Abstract

557,371. Fibrous compositions. BENNIE. J. May 13, 1942, Nos. 6520 and 7700. [Class 70] [Also in Group X] Wallboards, slabs &c., are made by moulding a plastic mixture of baked sawdust, an inert mineral filler, and a binder consisting of alkali silicate, the baked sawdust having previously been heated above the temperature at which water is evolved but below carbonization point, i.e., at 230‹ C. to 250‹ C. The filler may be china clay, precipitated chalk, ground limestone, asbestine, asbestos &c., and a proportion of alkali silicofluoride and Portland &c., cement may be added to the mixture. The moulded slabs &c., may be strengthened by a reinforcement of slotted &c., wood, expanded metal, wire netting, woven textile material such as scrim, hessian &c., vegetable fibres such as bagasse or bamboo or mineral fibres such as asbestos or slag wool. There may also be incorporated in the composition as a waterproofing ingredient a proportion of synthetic resin or wax such as chlorinated naphthalene.
