Abstract

Calcium aluminate is extracted with water, and alumina and an insoluble calcium salt are precipitated from the solution by a reagent such as carbon dioxide, phosphoric acid or fluoric acid. When carbon dioxide is used, calcium carbonate may be removed from the mixed precipitate either by dissolution in say dilute hydrochloric acid preferably after calcination at 500--600 DEG C., or by calcining the precipitate to convert the calcium carbonate to lime which is washed out by water, or by dissolution in water containing carbon dioxide. The bicarbonate solution obtained is subjected to heat or vacuum to remove carbon dioxide, or treated with lime. The process is preferably effected in a cyclic manner, the leaching water being continuously circulated. A leaching temperature of 25--35 DEG C. is specified. The aluminate solution obtained contains 0,2--3 grms. alumina per litre. The calcium aluminate may be produced from siliceous bauxite. Aluminate cements and clinkers may be leached. The calcium carbonate-alumina precipitate may be used for the manufacture of lacs, abrasive products or aluminium sulphate, or may be mixed with baryta for the production of barium aluminate. This product may be used in the purification of water.ALSO:Baryta is added to a precipitated admixture of calcium carbonate and alumina to form barium aluminate. This product is adapted for use in the purification of water.
