Abstract
In the manufacture of basic zirconium sulphate, an aqueous liquid containing zirconium in sulphate solution and not containing any acid other than sulphuric acid and without the addition of any reagent containing a cation other than zirconium, is evaporated until the zirconium concentration reaches at least 24 per cent ZrO2, the SO3/ZrO2 ratio being between 0.8 and 3.0, preferably 1.0-1.6 at the beginning of the concentration, and the precipitated basic sulphate is separated. Crystallization may be brought about by agitation whilst the liquors are hot, and be speeded by seeding. Insoluble impurities may be removed at an intermediate stage in the evaporation, e.g. when the ZrO2 content is 15 per cent, silica separating wholly or partly when concentration is effected above 75 DEG C. The basic zirconium sulphate yields the oxide on calcination. The starting solution may be obtained by heating zircon sand &c., or used refractory bricks with calcium oxide and/or hydroxide, and if desired, a small quantity of calcium chloride, at, say, 1100-1250 DEG C., washing the clinker, if desired, with dilute hydrochloric acid and water, and extracting with strong sulphuric acid up to 220 DEG C. The paste is heated to dryness, and then mixed with water to form a slurry which is treated according to the process of Specification 610,548 Specification 559,118 also is referred to.
