Abstract

Lithium compounds, especially salts such as the sulphate, are recovered from solutions containing both lithium and aluminium, by precipitating the aluminium as the hydroxide by suitable pH adjustment preferably to between pH4-pH12, separating the precipitate, heating it to at least 200 DEG C., and washing it to extract the lithium contained therein. The process may be combined with the recovery of lithium values from ores containing lithium and aluminium which have been acid treated to solubilize the lithium, by mixing the precipitate with the treated ore, and calcining and washing the mixture. Thus, in an example, lepidolite was ground and heated with 60 DEG B\'e sulphuric acid, and then calcined and treated with water to give solutions containing lithium and aluminium. The initial solution, which is rich in lithium, is treated with calcium carbonate to precipitate aluminium hydroxide containing some of the lithium, and this precipitate is mixed with the next batch of acid-treated ore. The solution remaining after the precipitation is alumina-free lithium sulphate. The later solutions from the ore-washing, which are comparatively poor in lithium, are employed as wash liquors for later batches of acid-treated and calcined ore and precipitate.
