Abstract

Permeable structures of concrete, mortar, and the like are rendered less permeable, and are strengthened, by applying separately, e.g. by pressure, lime water and carbon dioxide either alone, mixed with other gases, e.g. air, or in aqueous solution. To ensure that insoluble crystalline calcium carbonate is formed by the reaction of the calcium hydrate and the carbon dioxide, the p temperature should not be allowed to rise to 60 DEG C. and the carbon dioxide should not be supplied in excess. The lime water may also contain, in suspension, solid filling material, e.g. calcium carbonate, finely crushed brick or other puzzolanic material.
