Abstract

A fertilizer containing tri-magnesium phosphate, a magnesium-calcium phosphate, or an alkali-magnesium-calcium phosphate is obtained by heating to about 900-1100 DEG C. in an atmosphere containing water vapour, a mixture of a natural calcium phosphate with magnesium chloride or sulphate with or without an alkali salt and with enough silica to form calcium orthosilicate with the calcium displaced by the magnesium and alkali metal. When iron or aluminium is present, the amount of silica may be reduced as calcium ferrite or aluminate are then formed, and silica may be omitted when enough is present in the raw phosphate. A suitable mixture may be made of the magnesium salt with phosphates too poor and too rich in silica, but if too much silica is present, lime must be added to combine with the excess. The atmosphere containing water vapour may be provided by admitting steam to the heating-chamber or by direct heating with a fuel containing hydrogen or by both methods.
